The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Albert L. Simpson (MCSN: 0-27841), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of an Assault Rifle Platoon of Company E, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 to 30 June 1944. Cool and daring in the face of grave peril, Second Lieutenant Simpson skillfully directed his platoon in fierce combat with the enemy and, on several occasions, succeeded in spotting and wiping out Japanese snipers before they could open fire. Although wounded by enemy action on 30 June, he steadfastly remained with his platoon, until its position could be consolidated. His inspiring leadership, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
