The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James H. Sim (MCSN: 346702), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Marine Aircraft Group FOURTEEN during a severe shelling by Japanese naval forces off Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, 13 October 1942. Although he and the three other occupants of his open fox hole were injured when a salvo of enemy shells felled a large tree in the vicinity, Sergeant Sim, upon regaining consciousness, unhesitatingly exposed himself to sustained shellfire in order to extricate his comrades and continued his unselfish efforts in their behalf by placing them in an ambulance and escorting them to the hospital. His courageous action in the face of grave peril was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
