The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Spencer V. Silverthorne, Jr. (MCSN: 0-25280), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Assistant G-2 of the SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, from 1 April to 21 June 1945. Continuing to lead patrols on dangerous missions which furnished information of great value, First Lieutenant Silverthorne braved enemy fire to enter enemy caves not previously reconnoitered. On 13 June, he voluntarily exposed himself to enemy fire for a period of five hours in an effort to induce a strong enemy group to surrender. Moving ahead of the advancing troops, he undertook to persuade Japanese troops to surrender their arms and themselves. By his courage, perseverance and devotion to duty, he contributed materially to the successful completion of the operation and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
