The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Joseph M. Schmittou (MCSN: 262906), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with an Assault Company of the FIRST Marine Division in combat against enemy Japanese forces at Cape Gloucester, New Britain, 26 to 28 December 1943. After leading his men for two days against the enemy in the face of heavy machine-gun, rifle and mortar fire, First Sergeant Schmittou was seriously wounded on 28 December while engaged in a fierce fire fight, but courageously continued to carry out his duties until ordered to the rear by his commanding officer. By his outstanding leadership and heroic devotion to duty throughout this critical period, he rendered invaluable assistance to his company commanding officer and was an inspiration to all with whom he came in contact. First Sergeant Schmittou’s valiant conduct under the most hazardous conditions was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
