The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Raymond O. Sherman, Jr. (MCSN: 307102), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of Company C, Second Armored Amphibian Battalion, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 15 June 1944. Unsupported by infantry, Platoon Sergeant Sherman led his section one hundred yards beyond the front lines and, coolly directing effective fire, destroyed hostile machine gun nests, pillboxes and troops and disorganized enemy rear areas. When one of his two armored amphibians was disabled, he evacuated the crew in the face of heavy enemy resistance and continued delivering fire from his own vehicle. His courage and gallant devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Platoon Sergeant Sherman and the United States Naval Service.
