The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Elliott B. Sherlock (MCSN: 354538), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Runner of Headquarters and Service Company, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on 26 and 28 December 1943. Frequently under vicious enemy sniper fire while engaged as runner between the front lines and the regimental command post, Corporal Sherlock resolutely conveyed the vital messages with which he was entrusted. With bold aggressiveness he pushed through tremendous barrages, on 28 December, to carry information of a dangerous ammunition shortage to the command post and immediately returned to continue his essential work. Corporal Sherlock’s daring initiative, indomitable fortitude and unflinching devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
