The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Winslow Shelton (MCSN: 942233), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader of Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 12 March 1945. After his squad leader was wounded during an attack on an enemy main line of resistance in very difficult terrain, Corporal Shelton assumed command of the squad and, although the area was infested by well-concealed hostile riflemen, unhesitatingly moved from man to man issuing orders and personally insuring the maintenance of contact with adjacent units. When a small group of about twelve of the Japanese boldly attempted a daylight infiltration, he quickly moved into position and succeeded in killing the entire force. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
