The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jack Sharkey (MCSN: 510592), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tinian, Gilbert Islands, on 20 November 1943. With five members of his platoon seriously wounded when the enemy launched a terrific mortar barrage during fierce hostilities on D-Day, Private First Class Sharkey, although wounded himself during the bitter action, further risked his life to aid the fallen marines and, boldly crossing the danger zone, calmly and skillfully ministered his comrades despite the enemy’s incessant shellfire. by his daring initiative, outstanding fortitude and grave concern for the safety of others in the face of grave peril, Private First Class Sharkey served as an inspiration to others in the vicinity and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
