The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Charles J. Setzer (MCSN: 0-32997), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 21 February 1945. When his company’s advance against a heavily armed, deeply entrenched Japanese force was held up by fire to the front of his platoon, Second Lieutenant Setzer directed a platoon of tanks forward and, in the face of intense hostile automatic fire, personally led each tank into position. Despite a heavy enemy artillery barrage, he remained in an exposed position and, directing the fire of the tanks against the emplacements holding up the advance, enabled his company to continue the attack. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Second Lieutenant Setzer and the United States Naval Service.
