The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Francis B. Seeley (MCSN: 818419), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Weapons Platoon Supply Corporal serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Saipan, in the Marianas, on 18 June 1944. When his company suffered severe casualties while executing a bold attack against a fiercely defended Japanese position, Private First Class Seeley voluntarily made repeated trips into the zone of fire, aiding materially in the evacuation of casualties. Volunteering for a second time during an attack through the same area by another company of Marines, he again went forward alone in the face of terrific concentration of enemy fire and succeeded in evacuating one of the wounded but was mortally struck down as he returned to the exposed area to assist others. By his intrepid initiative, resolute fortitude and great personal valor in the face of tremendous opposition, Private First Class Seeley contributed materially to the advance of our forces in the relentless drive against this vital Japanese stronghold, and his self-sacrificing devotion to duty throughout a period of bitter hostilities upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
