Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 12587 (March 19, 1946)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert J. Sebring (MCSN: 455964), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Group Leader serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Saipan, in the Marianas, on 18 June 1944. Fearlessly penetrating enemy-held territory with his squad, Corporal Sebring worked with resourceful skill and initiative in a determined effort to fulfill the hazardous mission of building an outpost line of resistance under continuous enemy fire. Observing one of his group struck down by a vicious blast from a Japanese emplacement during the final stage of construction, he unhesitatingly risked his life to proceed to the aid of his comrade in a valiant effort to evacuate him from the danger area but was himself mortally wounded while carrying out his voluntary mission. By his daring initiative, unfaltering technical ability and tenacious determination in the face of extreme peril, Corporal Sebring contributed materially to the success of our operations against the vital Japanese stronghold, and his undaunted courage and self-sacrificing conduct on behalf of his comrade upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
