The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain John L. Schwabe (MCSN: 0-8506), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Intelligence Officer of the Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, from 20 to 23 November 1943. Separated from the Regimental Command Post when his amphibian tractor was disabled by hostile fire during landing operations on D-Day, Captain Schwab swam to shore under the enemy’s incessant barrage and immediately joined in the attack on the north beach of Betio. Placing himself between the remnants of two infantry battalions, he labored diligently with limited communication facilities to establish a liaison between the units and the Regimental Headquarters and, on his own initiative, organized and established supply dumps close to our front lines which contributed immeasurably to the defeat of the enemy in that sector. With Japanese snipers still active in the area, he assumed the task of caring for those killed in battle, working tirelessly and with dauntless courage until a regularly designated officer arrived. His determined perseverance, outstanding fortitude and unwavering devotion to duty throughout were essential factors in the success of our operations against this vital hostile stronghold and reflect the highest credit upon Captain Schwab and the United States Naval Service.
