The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Howard G. Schultz (MCSN: 955304), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman of Company A, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 4 May 1945. When his company received a heavy volume of enemy grenades and demolition charges during an assault on a strongly-defended hostile ridge, Private First Class Schultz voluntarily crawled forward to the top of a ridge despite enemy small-arms fire from concealed positions and, using hand grenades and rifle fire, neutralized the enemy resistance, thereby enabling his company to seize the objective. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
