The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Robert L. Schueler (MCSN: 0-15591), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as an Artillery Forward Observer of Battery E, Second Battalion, Fourteenth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 7 and 8 March 1945. Although suffering from wounds when the unit which he was supporting attacked a heavily fortified position over difficult terrain, First Lieutenant Schueler constantly moved with the most forward elements and, exposing himself to hostile fire in order to gain observations, greatly facilitated the advance of our troops by his effective control of the supporting artillery fire. During a heavy engagement on 7 March, he courageously made his way forward to a small piece of high ground and, in the face of intense enemy fire, conducted accurate supporting fires. Painfully wounded on the afternoon of 8 March, he consistently refused evacuation and remained active at his post until he had registered the defensive fires of his unit and a replacement observer arrived. By his fortitude, steadfastness and devotion to duty throughout, First Lieutenant Schueler upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
