    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Louis G. Schooley (MCSN: 947407), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of a Crash Crew of Marine Aircraft Group THIRTY-ONE. in action against enemy Japanese forces on Yontan Airfield, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on the night of 24 May 1945. After engaging the enemy in a fire fight during a desperate suicide airborne attack on Yontan Airfield. Private First Class Schooley courageously drove his truck within close proximity of the enemy and, with his floodlights, illuminated their position to bring them within the scope of direct fire, Abandoning his truck, he again attacked the hostile Japanese, succeeding in killing one and materially aiding in repulsing the hostile attack although seriously wounded during the ensuing violent action. His bravery and initiative in the face of enemy fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
