The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Daniel R. Schneider (MCSN: 965272), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Gunner of Company A, First Tank Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 10 May 1945. Although seriously wounded by hostile machine-gun fire while firing a mission in direct support of an infantry advance on a heavily-defended enemy position, Private First Class Schneider courageously remained at his gun without notifying his tank commander of his wounds and destroyed two Japanese machine-gun positions, thereby aiding materially in the coordinated tank-infantry advance. His indomitable fighting spirit and gallant devotion to duty reflect the highest credit on Private First Class Schneider and the United States Naval Service.
