The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Herbert Anthony Scherzinger (MCSN: 1070718), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Automatic Rifleman of Company H, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 6 February 1951. Subjected to direct hostile small arms, mortar and machine gun fire during an attack on a heavily defended, deeply entrenched enemy strongpoint, Private First Class Scherzinger unhesitatingly advanced to a favorable location to bring accurate fire to bear upon the hostile force. With his ammunition supply critically low, he charged directly into the position, utilizing his remaining ammunition to best advantage and inflicting maximum casualties on the enemy. Fatally struck down during the bitter conflict, Private First Class Scherzinger, by his daring initiative, courageous fighting spirit and grave concern for others at the risk of his own life, contributed to the success of his platoon in achieving its objective with minimum loss, and his unrelenting devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
