The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Richard A. Scheidt (MCSN: 474135), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the invasion of Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, on 1 and 2 February 1944. Painfully wounded in the arm during the initial fighting, Private First Class Scheidt valiantly continued to press home the assault. At the height of the engagement, he voluntarily exposed himself to intense enemy fire to reach the side of a fallen comrade, removing the injured Marine from an exposed position in advance of the front lines to a point suitable for evacuation. His gallant spirit of self-sacrifice and heroic devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Scheidt and the United States Naval Service.
