The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Francis J. Schauner, Jr. (MCSN: 493617), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Volunteer Member of a patrol with Battery A, First Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 27 June 1944. When one member of the patrol was wounded by an enemy machine gun concealed in a pillbox and the Marine who went to his rescue was killed, Private First Class Schauner dashed through the hostile fire and rescued the wounded man. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Schauner and the United States Naval Service.
