The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Corporal James Scavera (MCSN: 330096), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action at New Georgia, Solomon Islands. Although painfully injured by enemy mortar fire, he manned his machine gun alone and effected the destruction of two enemy gun emplacements, enabling all of the wounded in his area to be safely evacuated on 20 July 1943.
