Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 6067

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Angelo L. Savio (MCSN: 322204), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Acting Squad Leader of the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Saipan, Mariana Islands 17 June 1944. During an enemy tank-led counterattack at night, Corporal Savio brought his squad from a rear area to reinforce a sector in the line. Although hostile tanks were continuously crossing this part of the defense position, and subjecting it to heavy machine-gun and cannon fire, he skillfully organized his men in the darkness and, obtaining ammunition for them, emplaced them in shallow trenches. When three Japanese tanks assaulted his squad frontally before the emplacements could be dug deeper, Corporal Savio coolly held his sector by moving the men out of foxholes which were in the direct route of the tanks, allowing the tanks to pass, and then leading the men back into their positions in time to engage and repulse the enemy infantrymen who followed. Through his courageous actions in supervising the disposition and activities of his men while exposed to hostile fire, Corporal Savio contributed immeasurably to the repulse of the enemy attack in this sector, and his conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
