The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Lee D. Sanders (MCSN: 296597), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as platoon leader of a rifle company serving with the Twenty-second Marines Reinforced, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Parry Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Mariana Islands, on 22 February 1944. When his platoon suffered numerous casualties as a result of heavy enemy fire, Sergeant Sanders, in the absence of his platoon leader, unhesitatingly assumed command and, skillfully withdrawing the men from their extremely hazardous position, reorganized the platoon and courageously led a renewed attack against severe, determined hostile resistance until he was fatally wounded. Sergeant Sanders’ indomitable fighting spirit and valiant leadership in the face of grave peril were an inspiration to his men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
