The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Stanley Sander (MCSN: 378170), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 6 July 1944. Leading his squad into a thickly wooded area where there were known to be caves harboring numerous enemy troops, Corporal Sander carried out his assigned mission of making contact with the platoon on his left flank and destroying the pockets of enemy resistance. Although he was shot and painfully wounded, he remained with his squad and served to inspire his men to heroic endeavor by his coolness and outstanding courage in facing the enemy. His splendid leadership and unswerving devotion to duty throughout reflect great credit upon Corporal Sander and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
