    The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Harold J. Salvatore (MCSN: 546646), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity wile serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-second Marines, First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 24 July 1944. Courageously advancing well ahead of his platoon in the face of intense accurate enemy fire, Private First Class Salvatore sought out and personally destroyed a Japanese machine-gun and mortar crew which was inflicting heavy casualties on our forces and, by his outstanding initiative and aggressive determination, located the supporting installations for the hostile stronghold and skillfully adjusted effective fire against them. Later, while heroically directing fire on enemy emplacements from exposed positions, he was mortally wounded. Private First Class Salvatore’s indomitable fighting spirit and self-sacrificing devotion to duty under extremely perilous conditions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
