The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant William R. Salsbury (MCSN: 292797), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Squad Leader serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-second Marines, First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Guam, Mariana Islands, from 21 to 25 July 1944. When our front lines were in danger of being overwhelmed during a desperate enemy counterattack the night of 25 July, Sergeant Salsbury and his men held their position despite intense rifle, machine-gun and mortar fire and, directing return fire with devastating effectiveness, succeeded in thwarting the vicious onslaught. With his squad almost completely annihilated, he remained steadfast at his post, carrying on until he himself was critically wounded by an enemy grenade. By his outstanding leadership, gallant fighting spirit and cool courage in the face of grave danger, Sergeant Salsbury contributed materially to the success of the engagement, and his zealous devotion to duty throughout this and many previous assault missions was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
