The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commissioned Warrant Officer Harry E. Salisbury (MCSN: 0-15704), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Instrument Repairman of the Seventh Service Regiment, Service Command, Fleet Marine Force, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Shima, Ryukyu Islands, 9 June 1945. Accompanied by an officer and two enlisted men on an assigned mission in a small truck, Commissioned Warrant Officer Salisbury proceeded to an antiaircraft gun position through territory supposedly cleared of hostile troops. Although wounded when enemy riflemen and a machine-gun crew opened fire after their vehicle was halted on an impassable sector of the narrow road, he seized a carbine, arose and advanced toward the enemy machine-gun, firing as he walked forward to allow the others, who had taken cover behind the truck, to withdraw to safety. When the hostile fire ceased momentarily, he ran to the truck and backed out of the enemy’s range, picking up his comrades en route. By his courage, initiative and determination, Commissioned Warrant Officer Salisbury upheld the highest traditions of the Unites States Naval Service.
