The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George W. Sailor (MCSN: 395111), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 29 June 1944. Displaying outstanding ability as a leader, Sergeant Sailor repeatedly directed patrols against hostile machine-gun nests and other emplacements and, on one occasion, voluntarily organized a group of three men to attack an enemy machine-gun nest, eliminating it with grenades and rifle fire. Fired on during this action from other enemy positions, he immediately led another patrol of three men to locate these emplacements and, after personally reconnoitering the area to find the enemy, returned and obtained an additional twelve men from his company. Courageously leading the reinforced patrol through the intense enemy fire, he contributed materially to his unit’s elimination of three Japanese machine-gun positions and eighteen of the defending personnel. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
