The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant August Sacker, Jr. (MCSN: 0-27190), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Platoon leader attached to the Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands 15 June 1944. A fearless and aggressive fighter, Second Lieutenant Sacker boldly led his rifle platoon on its daring assault on a series of strongly defended enemy pillboxes, fearlessly exposing himself to the terrific fire of Japanese guns in order to direct the approach to enemy emplacements and effect their neutralization. By his gallant leadership and exceptional courage in the face of peril, Second Lieutenant Sacker contributed essentially to the success of our D-Day landing on Saipan and to the ultimate success of numerous missions pointing to further victories over the Japanese. His unwavering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
