The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alex Sabo (MCSN: 294582), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of a Naval Gunfire Control Team, of the Second Joint Assault Signal Company, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 16 June 1944. While serving as a scout for his team during an intense hostile counterattack, Sergeant Sabo voluntarily left his place of cover to move through heavy concentrations of enemy artillery, mortar and small-arms fire to an observation post on open, level terrain. Although subjected to heavy fire from all sides, he courageously held his position and coolly directed highly effective supporting naval gunfire on the advancing Japanese troops and tanks, thereby contributing greatly to the repulse of the enemy counterattack. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
