The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Jesse J. Ryan (MCSN: 924080), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters Company, Second Battalion, Twenty-sixty Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 10 March 1945. When three men in his Battalion were seriously wounded during an exchange of grenades with the Japanese, Private Ryan went to their assistance to administer first aid and to make them comfortable for the night and, after making three separate trips early the next morning, evacuated the men to an area where they could be assisted by stretcher-bearers. While returning to the lines, he observed another seriously wounded comrade in front of our lines unable to move and, after crawling to the stricken man, succeeded in carrying him to the rear area for treatment. His outstanding initiative and courage in the face of intense enemy fire reflect the highest credit upon Private Ryan and the United States Naval Service.
