The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Samuel Rocco Ruta (MCSN: 308419), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Guide serving with the First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, on 15 September 1944. When his company was pinned down by withering fire from concealed enemy emplacements and communications with the supporting tanks failed, Sergeant Ruta unhesitatingly climbed to a vital point of vantage behind the turret of the landing tank to direct the fire of the tanks and the advance of his squad. Although mortally wounded by hostile fire as he maintained his exposed position, he tenaciously continued leading his men until the objective was overrun. Sergeant Ruta’s skillful leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and valiant devotion to duty were an inspiration to his men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
