The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Donald V. Rose (MCSN: 0-9968), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of Marine Scout-Bombing Squadron TWO HUNDRED THIRTY-TWO (VMSB-232), in action against enemy Japanese surface forces off Ramos Island in the Solomon Islands on 28 August, 1942. In the face of heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire, Second Lieutenant Rose and his squadron boldly attacked four enemy destroyers, sinking three. His cool courage and expert airmanship contributed in large part to the success of their mission.
