The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Raymond J. Romancik (MCSN: 832127), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during the invasion of Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, 20 November 1943. When his platoon, surrounded by the enemy, lost all contact with friendly troops, Private First class Romancik courageously volunteered to investigate beyond the flanks of his unit in a daring attempt to locate other groups of Marines. Skillfully moving across an open area swept by hostile fire, he eventually contacted another company of his Battalion and informed them of the need of his beleaguered platoon for reinforcements, ammunition and medical supplies, which were immediately dispatched. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, he was making his way back through enemy lines to join his comrades when killed by Japanese machine-gun fire. Private First Class Romancik’s extreme valor and fearless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
