The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class John F. Rolleri (MCSN: 451353), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Machine Gun Crewman while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa Shima, Ryukyu Islands, 1 April 1945. When his platoon was subjected to a fierce and desperate enemy attack, Private First Class Rolleri, boldly moved his machine gun to an embankment where he steadfastly maintained an accurate and steady stream of fire to account for nineteen of the enemy, thereby contributing materially in repelling the enemy attack before being mortally wounded by rifle fire. His splendid initiative, cool courage and resolute devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
