The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Richard E. Rohrer (MCSN: 0-13202), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company C, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 13 May 1945. During an assault on a strongly-held enemy ridge, Captain Rohrer assumed personal leadership of a small patrol to spearhead the assault of his company. After a hostile counterattack stopped the company short of its objective and caused heavy casualties and disorganization, he took control of an assault element, reorganized his forces and, in the face of heavy hostile mortar and small-arms fire, led his company in seizing its objective. By his outstanding courage and determination under fire, Captain Rohrer contributed materially to his company’s success and enabled other units in the regimental zone of action to advance. His unwavering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
