The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Virgil R. Rogers (MCSN: 351964), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marine Raider Battalion during action against enemy Japanese forces on Tulagi, Solomon Islands, 7 August, 1942. Isolated from his company during a night attack and trapped on three sides by Japanese counterattacking forces, Private First Class Rogers, against great odds, remained at his post and personally destroyed three of the enemy before he was wounded. Despite the seriousness of his injuries, he pleaded with his superiors to be allowed to continue in action, thereby contributing materially to the ultimate defeat of the enemy counterattack. His valiant courage and outstanding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
