Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 12879

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Robert H. Rogers (MCSN: 0-9952), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company E, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 8 July 1944. After his company had been considerably disorganized on landing, Captain Rogers succeeded in reorganizing it despite intense mortar and artillery fire and, skillfully executing a ninety-degree change in direction, pressed the attack parallel to the beach. Although his company’s supporting tanks were forced to withdraw by the heavy concentration of hostile artillery fire after his unit had reached an isolated position, he valiantly held this ground during the night and renewed the attack the following morning to the initial objective. Captain Rogers’ inspiring leadership, tactical judgment and zealous devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
