The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Paul H. Rogers (MCSN: 521197), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Crewman of Company A, First Tank Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 16 June 1945. From a position well forward of friendly lines, Corporal Rogers voluntarily rode on the back of his tank through intense enemy mortar and small-arms fire in order to protect two wounded Marines who were being evacuated, using his own body to shield them while administering first aid and covering them by fire from his weapon until the safety of an aid station was reached. By his courageous devotion to duty and spirit of self-sacrifice, Corporal Rogers was instrumental in saving the wounded men’s lives, and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
