The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Louis D. Rogers (MCSN: 0-39242), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as an Artillery Forward Observer of Battery E, Second Battalion, Eleventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 17 June 1945. Armed with a sub-machine gun, Second Lieutenant Rogers made his way alone through heavy hostile fire to the pinnacle of a strongly-defended enemy ridge needed for an observation post and killed three of the Japanese in clearing the position. From this point of observation, despite heavy hostile snipe and machine-gun fire, he directed supporting fires until the mission of his Battalion was completed. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
