Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 53941 (January 31, 1946)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal John D. Rogers (MCSN: 533710), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader in a platoon of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 15 May 1945. Heedless of his own wounds, Corporal Rogers calmly and efficiently reorganized his casualty-depleted squad and, rallying his shaken men to greater efforts, valiantly led his unit through the shattering hostile fire to drive the fiercely fighting Japanese from their strategic hill positions. Tenaciously holding his ground in the face of determined enemy counterattacks, he skillfully directed his men in repulsing the desperate onslaughts, permitting his evacuation only after the lines had been stabilized for the night. By his aggressive leadership, inspiring example and indomitable fighting spirit, Corporal Rogers contributed materially to the success of the mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Unites States Naval Service.
