Headquarters Western Task Force, General Orders No. 28 (December 30, 1942)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Major Francis M. Rogers (MCSN: 0-8063), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action while attached to the staff of Admiral H. K. Hewitt, United States Navy, on the afternoon of 8 November 1942, On that date, he drove a commandeered automobile for the Chief of Staff, Western Task Force, from Fedala through the enemy lines to Headquarters French Military District in Casablanca, thence to Headquarters French Naval District, thence returning to Red Beach 2, at Fedala. Although fired upon several times by small arms fire and in spite of the fact that the French Naval-Military District at the time of the visit to Headquarters, that District was under severe bombardment from American bombers, Major Rogers drove boldly forward with utter disregard to his own safety. His calmness, courage and boldness contributed materially to the successful completion of the trip.
