The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harlan G. Roe (MCSN: 811761), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters Company, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 23 September 1944. As a member of a party clearing ravines and ridges of snipers hidden in caves, Private First Class Roe courageously assisted in removing four wounded comrades from the mouth of a cave which was receiving heavy enemy cross-fire from concealed installations. While acting as a guide for an Army anti-sniper patrol on 24 September, he boldly exposed himself to enemy fire to go to the aid of three men who were hit and while acting as a stretcher-bearer in evacuating one of the casualties, he was wounded by a hostile sniper. By his bravery, initiative and unwavering devotion to duty throughout, Private First Class Roe upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
