The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Wayne B. Robison (MCSN: 225395), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Eighteenth Marines (Engineer), SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, 20 November 1943. Determined and courageous throughout the fierce hostilities on D-Day, Private First Class Robinson fearlessly braved the enemy’s shattering machine-gun and sniper fire to carry vitally needed supplies to flame throwers operating in the front lines, thereby enabling his platoon to continue its successful attacks against the Japanese during the initial stages of the furious battle. Fighting boldly throughout a three-day period of bitter offensive action, he repeatedly exposed himself to intense hostile shellfire to provide close-in cover and assist assaulting flame throwers moving into position for sustained operations against a fanatic enemy. By his daring initiative, his dauntless perseverance and outstanding devotion to duty throughout, Private First Class Robinson contributed materially to the success of our operations against this vital hostile stronghold and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
