The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant John D. Robertson, Jr. (MCSN: 0-18522), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader, attached to Company K, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 24 May 1945. Courageously leading his platoon toward the objective through a barrage of enemy fire, First Lieutenant Robertson skillfully dislodged the Japanese from a vital hill and, fighting furiously against tremendous opposition, vigorously supported the aggressive advance of his company despite casualty losses. Mortally wounded by enemy sniper fire in an attempt to evacuate his wounded men, First Lieutenant Robertson, by his valiant leadership, courage in the face of grave danger and valiant devotion to duty, served as a constant inspiration to his men and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
