The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant James E. Robertson (MCSN: 296733), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of the Third 155-mm. Howitzer Battalion, Third Corps Artillery, Third Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 3 October 1944. Quickly leaving his covered position when a hospital corpsman was wounded and fell in the path of enemy sniper fire while attempting to reach a casualty in a machine gun position, Platoon Sergeant Robertson rushed to the machine gun post and assisted the corpsman to cover within this position. Pinned down by hostile rifle fire, he stayed with the corpsman during the remaining daylight hours and then, covering the wounded man from enemy fire with his own body, carried him to a safe position as darkness approached. His courage under fire and devotion to the welfare of others reflect the highest credit upon Platoon Sergeant Robertson and the United States Naval Service.
