The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Arundel C. Richardson (MCSN: 911097), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Driver of Company A, Fifth Tank Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 6 March 1945. When his tank was disabled after striking a mine forward of our front lines, Corporal Richardson dismounted from the vehicle despite intense hostile small-arms fire and armed with a machine gun, succeeded in pinning the enemy down, thereby enabling the remaining members of his crew, one of whom was wounded, to escape from the tank. His initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
