The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Warrant Officer Charles S. H. Revels (MCSN: 0-27667), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a Reconnaissance Patrol of Regimental Weapons Company, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Cape Torokina Area, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, from 20 to 23 December 1943. Attacked by Japanese troops while leading his patrol into hostile territory, Warrant Officer Revels fiercely engaged the enemy, killing one soldier and after disengaging his men, resolutely proceeded deeper into the hostile stronghold to gather vital information. With the entire Japanese position alert the following day when a member of his patrol intercepted and killed one of the enemy, he succeeded in killing two gunners his pistol and in silencing a hostile machine gun, then skillfully directed and covered the withdrawal of his patrol. Remaining for twenty-three hours thereafter close to the enemy bivouac area, he obtained additional data before leading the survivors of his patrol back through the strong Japanese position to his own lines. An indomitable fighter, Warrant Officer Revels contributed materially to our success in the area and his gallant conduct throughout this extremely hazardous mission was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
