The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Stephen Paul Resser (MCSN: 322809), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving in the Radio Section of the First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Islands, 17 September 1944. While his battalion was advancing against the enemy and terrific fire from Japanese guns was making impossible the maintenance of constant communications, Corporal Resser volunteered to lay a wire to Company C. In the absence of wire team personnel, he courageously worked alone over an extremely difficult terrain which was infested with numerous hostile snipers until mortally wounded by enemy machine gun fire. By his daring initiative and heroic efforts, Corporal Resser contributed materially to the ultimate success of a vital campaign pointing toward further victories over the Japanese. His self-sacrificing spirit and valiant conduct were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
