The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Peter J. Renzo (MCSN: 275928), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Assistant Platoon Leader of Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Guam, Mariana Islands, on 26 July 1944. When a numerically superior hostile force enveloped his position, Platoon Sergeant Renzo assisted his Platoon Leader in a fierce hand-to-hand struggle with the enemy and, after assuming command when his Platoon Leader was wounded for the third time, quickly directed the evacuation of the wounded despite his own injuries. Then, he continued to lead his platoon in defending his company’s sector until the attack had been repulsed. After reorganizing his men, he led the platoon in combat against the enemy until the arrival of a relief three weeks later. By his daring initiative, leadership and devotion to duty, Platoon Sergeant Renzo contributed to the successful repulse of the enemy and to the prevention of further hostile attacks, and his conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
