The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major John E. Rentsch (MCSN: 0-6292), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the landing and subsequent operations on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 5 July 1944. When the Commanding Officer of his Battalion was wounded and evacuated, Major Rentsch immediately assumed command and skillfully led the unit in all action throughout this period. Exposing himself to mortar, machine gun and small arms fire on numerous occasion, he consistently placed himself and his men in position where their firepower could be most effectively utilized, thereby contributing materially to the success of the campaign. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
